Since Mayor Franklin became Atlanta’s first female mayor in 2002, she has become one of the most popular political leaders in the city’s history. She has received national media attention and respect from Atlanta’s business leaders for her ethical and business-like approach to governing. She has been challenged by financial crises from sewers to infrastructure. In her last year as mayor, Mayor Franklin is facing an estimated $60 million projected shortfall in revenue, reduced wages for city employees, a hiring freeze, as well as closing some city parks and recreation areas. Mayor Franklin, in her traditional indomitable spirit, will discuss the economic challenges for Atlanta in 2009 and her plans to leave Atlanta in the black.
