WHO
Appointed in 1992 by Gov. Zell Miller, Leah Ward Sears was the first woman in Georgia to hold the position of chief justice and believed to be the first African-American woman to become chief justice of any state Supreme Court in the country. Sears is also the youngest person ever to be appointed to the Georgia Supreme Court. She has degrees from Cornell University, Emory University School of Law, University of Virginia School of Law and an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Morehouse College. Sears will retire from the bench on June 30. She will join the Atlanta office of the Schiff Hardin LLP law firm in October. She has been listed as a possible nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter.
