Local Pulitzer Winners Reveal Pathway to the Prize

WHO
Doug Blackmon is the Wall Street Journal’s bureau chief in Atlanta. Blackmon has been with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) since 1995. Blackmon previously worked as a reporter for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution (AJC) and the Arkansas Democrat. He wrote his first newspaper story when he was 12 years old for the Progress in Leland, Mississippi. He won his Pulitzer Prize in the category of General Nonfiction in 2009 for his book Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II.

Hank Klibanoff won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2007 with his book The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle and the Awakening of a Nation. Hank’s experience growing up in Alabama during major racial tension and his 35 years as a reporter has influenced him heavily in the writing of his Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Klibanoff was the former managing editor of the AJC. He is currently the managing editor of Cold Case Truth and Justice Report which attempts to find the truth about racial murders that took place during the Civil Rights movement in the South.

Mike Luckovich is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for Editorial Cartooning in 1995 and 2006. Although he has been working with the AJC since 1989, his cartoons have been seen in at least 150 newspapers around the nation. He has also won the top cartoonist award of the year from the National Cartoonist Society, The Reuben, in 2006. He will sign his popular book Four More Wars, a compilation of his best political cartoons.*

Cynthia Tucker won the Pulitzer Prize on Commentary in 2007. She is currently the editor of the opinion section at the AJC, but she will be moving to Washington D.C. to work as the political columnist for the AJC. She has held her current position with the AJC since 1990.

*An original Luckovich cartoon will be auctioned at the luncheon. Watch for details.
