Former First Lady Discusses The Status Of Mental Health In America at the APC

Rosalynn Carter is the former First Lady of the United States of America and a leading proponent for improving mental health services and ending the stigma against those with mental illnesses. No one has been more passionate or persuasive on the matter throughout her career in public service.

Mrs. Carter began her work to advance mental health care during her husband’s tenure as Governor of Georgia, when she was appointed to the Governor’s Commission to Improve Services for the Mentally and Emotionally Handicapped. She later served as a volunteer for Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta and was the honorary chairperson for the Special Olympics for four years. She was the active honorary chair of the President’s Commission on Mental Health, which resulted in passage of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980. Today she chairs The Carter Center Mental Health Task Force, an advisory body of experts, consumers, and advocates promoting mental health care.
