Garrison Keillor is the current host of the popular radio show
A Prairie Home Companion, which has been on air since 1974. He is also the personality behind
The Writer’s Almanac, which airs daily on NPR.
Keillor began his career working for Minnesota Educational Radio (MER), hosting the
Morning Drive program. He soon began submitting fiction to
The New Yorker. His first story, “Local Family Keeps Son Happy” appeared in 1970.
In 1973, he was given an assignment to write about the
Grand Ole Opry for
The New Yorker, where the local musicians first inspired his idea for a variety show. In 1974,
A Prairie Home Companion made its debut. The show has since become so popular that it airs on international radio stations. It currently runs as
Garrison Keillor’s Radio Show in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zeland.
An avid writer, Keillor has authored over a dozen books for adults and children. He has written for
The New Yorker,
The Atlantic Monthly, and
Salon.com. In 2006, he wrote the screenplay for the motion picture
A Prairie Home Companion, directed by Robert Altman.
In 1994, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. His recorded version of
Lake Wobegon Days won a Grammy Award in 1988 under the category “Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Album”.
