Falcons’ GM Discusses Winning Formula For Upcoming NFL Season at APC

Thomas Dimitroff was named Falcons' GM in 2008. Under his management the Falcons' record went from 4-12 in 2007 to 11-5 in 2008, earning him Sporting News Magazine's "Executive of the Year” honor.

Other accolades from Dimitroff’s 2008 season include Head Coach Mike Smith's "NFL Coach of the Year" award by the Associated Press and signing San Diego's Michael Turner, who ended up second in the NFL in rushing with 1,699 yards with a franchise-best 17 rushing touchdowns and finishing second in the MVP voting. In 2008, Falcons also selected Matt Ryan as the franchise quarterback. Ryan went on to be named the consensus Offensive Rookie of the Year by AP and Sporting News, becoming only the second rookie quarterback in NFL history (after Peyton Manning in 1998) to throw for 3,000 yards in his first season.

Dimitroff was born in Barberton, Ohio. He played football throughout college and captained his team as defensive back at the University of Guelph in Canada. After college, Dimitroff joined the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders as scouting coordinator. In 1992, he worked in the Dallas, Texas, office of the World League of American Football, tracking NFL player transactions and rosters. When the World league folded, Dimitroff moved to Japan, where he helped coach a friend's corporate American football team.

Returning to the United States, Dimitroff joined the Cleveland Browns. He worked under then-Head Coach Bill Belichick and then-pro Personnel Assistant Scott Pioli. From 1994-1997 Dimitroff was a full-time area scout for the Detroit Lions. He then held a similar college scouting position with the Browns from 1998 - 2001. In 2002, Dimitroff re-joined Belichick and Pioli with the New England Patriots as a national scout. He spent the season reporting on the nation's top prospects before being promoted to director of college scouting in 2003. He oversaw the team's college scouting operations through the 2007 season when he was hired as GM of the Atlanta Falcons.
Thomas and his wife, Angeline, have one son, Mason and reside in Atlanta.
