Sharp essay on writers vs editors

by Melanie Levs

I laughed out loud at this essay by Michael Kinsley in a recent issue of Time magazine. Being on both sides of the writer and editor equation — in the past and now — I can “sympathize” and relate to the personality “quirks” of each group (and share those quirks). Writers, if you’re reliable and solid, we editors appreciate you. Editors, if you respect us and pay us fairly, we appreciate you too!

Would YOU read it?

by Melanie Levs

Rather than add my take on the ABC News Democratic presidential candidate debate the other day (yawn), I thought I’d share some “gossip:” The New York Post is reporting today that Katie Couric might write a memoir. She has a poignant piece in this week’s Newsweek recalling the 10-year anniversary of her husband’s death, which perhaps started the rumor mill. If she did write a memoir, I think I’d read it. What about you?

Presidential changes at Cox Newspapers

by Melanie Levs

Jay Smith, president of Cox Newspapers Inc., is retiring as of May 1, according to today’s AJC. Sandy Schwartz, will succeed Smith and retain his current title as president of Cox Auto Trader.

Smith has been climbing the Cox ladder since 1971, when he began as a reporter for the Dayton Daily News. After a seven-year run as publisher of the AJC, he’s been president of Cox since 1994. Congratulations and best of luck to Jay Smith!

Pulitzer Prizes Announced Today

by Melanie Levs

However you pronounce it, there is no doubt you recognize the prestige of a Pulitzer Prize. The 2008 awards were anounced today and I am happy to say my hometown paper, The Washington Post, won six journalism awards, including for public service, breaking news reporting and commentary. The Boston Globe, The New York Times and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also won awards. Congratulations to all the winners, including Bob Dylan, who received a “special citation” from the Pulitzer board for his “profound impact on popular music and American culture.”
